Roof Update - 16th December

So what's been happening since the last update?

IMG 3475
The coping stones (big stones either end of the roof) have been lifted so that the purlin (long bits of wood which hold up the roof running east to west) ends can be inspected.  It is thought that these are the original timbers!  There is significant rot and decay and all but one require steel support (one of the eight already had this).  The one photographed is the good one!

IMG 3479The secret gutters (to help the water drain better) are being installed, along the edge of the coping stones.  Once the work is completed then you won't see them (hence they are secret!).

Repairs to the rafter ends and wall plate are under way.  You may have seen the rotten piece of wood at church the last few weeks which is from the roof.

In preparation for the new pointing, about 80% of the old has now been raked out (a slow and painful job).

Work on the bellcote has been completed.IMG 3478

More detailed photos can be found here from the architect.

Next Steps
- Install the steel supports to the purlin ends.
- Complete the work on the secret gutters and replace the coping stones.
- Finish raking out and then begin repointing.
- Work on the flat roofs to make watertight.
