Roof update - July 16th - The Plaster!!

Although church has been closed for a while we have been busy inside the building doing some urgent work on the chancel arch.

We were given permission by the diocese to remove the plaster from the chancel arch in preparation for the roof repair work that we hope to be doing before the bad weather returns at the end of the year.

There were two good reasons for removing the plaster now. The most important one is that the arch had become a potential danger with the real risk that large chunks of plaster could fall off and injure someone. It turns out that we were not a moment too soon. As we started to remove the plaster we discovered that it was more than 10cm thick in places and had completely separated from the stone beneath in quite large areas.

The second reason is to allow the arch to start drying out. The plaster, and the paint on it, was preventing the stone from "breathing" so any moisture that got into the wall could not escape naturally and so stayed in the wall causing all sorts of additional problems.

As you can see from the photographs here we have reached the stage where we now need a small scaffolding tower so that we can safely continue to remove the remaining plaster.
